I thought it would be interesting to compare this year’s meadow with last year’s. Here is how it looked in early April last year, on the left, and in late March this year on the right.
Similar comparisons from mid to late May, with last year on the left:
It is impossible to say yet if we have improved things or if it has just been an excellent year for buttercups but it is looking nice and colourful.
On 14th May, Lucy and I counted 37 species flowering:
1 | Creeping buttercup | Three nerved sandwort | Bluebells | Shining Crane’s Bill |
2 | Dandelion | Navelwort | Ivy leaved toadflax | Forget-me-not |
3 | Catsear | Ladys smock | Common dog Violet | Thale Cress |
4 | Yellow rattle | Cow parsley | Pink purslane | Pearlwort |
5 | Primrose | Goose grass | Sorrel | Mouse ear (common) |
6 | Groundsel | Thyme leaves speedwell | Red campion | Celandine |
7 | Daisy | Germander speedwell | Herb robert | Wood avens |
8 | Mouse ear | Slender speedwell | Stitchwort
9 | Pignut | Bugle | Strawberry
10 | Ribwort plantain | Wall speedwell | Meadow buttercup |
An addition this year is yellow rattle, which we sowed as seed last year from a local meadow. We also planted corms of wood anemone, which is quite hard to spot among the prolific ground elder.
